Lunas, inside the building.

Lunas Edge is a small server that runs Lunas on site, so the clinic keeps working when the internet or the cloud doesn’t. Lunas Edge AI sits beside it and keeps consultation audio and transcripts in the building.

Lunas Edge is in early access. The hardware on this page is the design as it stands, and it may change before it is generally available.

The film

Lunas Edge in a minute and a half.

Both boxes, what each one does, and what keeps working when the internet drops. Narrated, with captions.

Two boxes, two jobs

One keeps the clinic running. One keeps the conversation in the room.

Neither replaces Lunas in the cloud. The server carries the building when the connection can’t, and the AI box does the listening and drafting on site.

The server

Lunas Edge

A quiet business mini PC that runs Lunas inside the building — or a tower server, for a hospital.

  • Keeps working when the internet or the cloud is down: every screen in the building talks to the box.
  • Syncs to Australian cloud when the connection is back.
  • If the box fails, staff switch to the cloud copy from any connection.
  • Mirrored drives, an encrypted disk and a UPS.
  • No open inbound ports. It only ever reaches out, so nothing on your network has to be opened to the internet.
The AI box

Lunas Edge AI

A compact AI box with large shared memory and a GPU, sitting beside the server.

  • Runs speech-to-text and an open language model on site.
  • Consultation audio and transcripts never leave the building.
  • Holds no patient records. It processes, then forgets.
  • If it fails, the scribe says so and stops, and the clinic carries on. A conversation is never sent somewhere else instead.
Internet off, clinic on

Pull the plug on the internet. Watch what keeps moving.

Inside the building, every screen keeps talking to Lunas Edge. Changes wait on the box and go up to the cloud when the line comes back.

Try it: switch the internet off and on. Blue dots are people’s work, green is syncing to the cloud, teal is the AI box.

Diagram: four rooms in the clinic connect to Lunas Edge, which connects to Lunas Edge AI beside it and, over the internet, to Lunas cloud in Australia.
Online. Every change made in the clinic is copied up to Lunas cloud.

What’s inside

Built to fail politely.

Each part is there so that one thing going wrong doesn’t stop the clinic: a drive, the power, the AI box, or the line to the cloud.

The parts shown are the design as it stands, and may change.

The serverRuns Lunas for every screen in the building.

Encrypted diskWhat the box stores is encrypted at rest.

Mirrored drivesTwo drives, one copy. If one fails, the other carries on.

UPSBattery backup through short power cuts.

Setting it up

Plug it in. Claim it. It fills itself in.

Three steps, from the box arriving to the clinic working on it.

Plug it in

Power and a network cable. The box reaches out to Lunas on its own, so nothing has to be opened on your firewall.

Claim it with a code

An administrator claims the box with its code, and it joins your organisation — and only yours.

It downloads your data

It copies down your organisation’s records, then keeps in step with Lunas in the cloud.

When something fails

What happens, in plain words.

The point of a box in the building is what it does on a bad day, so here is every bad day we plan for.

The internet drops

Everyone in the building keeps working on Lunas Edge. Their changes sync to the cloud when the line is back.

The cloud can’t be reached

The same: the box carries the clinic until it can reach the cloud again.

The Edge box fails

Staff open the cloud copy of Lunas from any connection and carry on there.

A drive fails

Its mirror carries on with the same data.

The power cuts out

The UPS keeps the box running through short cuts.

The AI box fails

The scribe says so and stops. Everything else carries on, and what the clinician writes is kept and can be signed.
